I just added another 6 foot extension to my VGA monitor cable and the resolution is seriously effected. What are my other options.

If I get a DVI cable (which means I would need to by a DVI video card) can that cable be longer without loosing clarity?

Your VGA monitor cable can support lengths in access of 75 ft with no problem, your problem isn't in the cable itself its the means by which you are extending it. VGA cables are coaxial cables which like all transmission media is susceptible to interference and signal degradation. Im almost positive your problem is in your coupling of the cables. Try and single cord.

Different stories - for DVI some say 5 metres and another 1 metre at1600x1200, 60Hz to 9 metres at 1024 x 768, 60 Hz. Latter source indicates VGA (single cable) 10 metres at 1024 x 768, 60 Hz.

It seems that for a VGA cable or extension that you should search for UXGA cable for 1600 x 1200 pixels, SXGA for 1280 x 1024, XGA for 1024 x 768 - no mention of refresh Hz.

One of other options is use a lower monitor refresh rate to reduce signal frequency.
