Actually, Cromwell got rid of Charles I, James II (his son) was deposed in the Glorious Revolution. As far as what he did for us, on the good side, his victory in the English Civil War prevented Charles from establishing an absolute Monarchy like France had. In England, the King did not rule by divine right but rather with the consent of the governed, and if the king forgot that they could lose their head.
On the bad side, he was military dictator who believed that Parliament should have the ultimate authority but only if they never tried to disagree with him. He believed in religious tolerance, but massacred thousands of Irish Catholics because of their religion, and paid off his soldiers by stealing land from those Irish Catholics who managed to avoid getting massacred and giving it to his army.

Oliver Cromwell killed his king and took the control of Britain senate (He could become a king himself easily but didnt do so...but acted like one pretty much)
After his death, Britain became a kingdom once again. But their king didnt have any political influence, because the senate made every decision as they want. So we could say that he helped the birth of democracy by saving Britain from becoming a monarchy like France.
[ But let's not forget he was a dictator himself! Irony...isnt it? So was Robespierre, French who became a dictator to fight for democracy...]
Oh, and Oliver Cromwell contributed to Britain becoming an empire by rebuilding a powerful navy and defeating Netherland. After this victory, Ocean around Europe was simply Britain's colony because no other nation had that powerful navy.

If you're not British, nothing. If you are, he was a dictator who overthrew King James II (good riddance). The country returned to a monarchy after the end of his "reign" because they didn't like him. So, in a sense, nothing even if you ARE British. (Unless yuo count getting rid of James II, that's always a plus. ^_^ )
