I had that happen to a BMW. The starter tried to crank but the pistons had already smashed the spark plugs to smithereens. The technician showed me a spark plug which was compressed in half. I was running the car at 120 MPH, a car with over 206,000 miles. I guess I got what I deserved for buying a car which needed a $1,500 timing belt change.

Had one spent $600 to replace the timing belt on the Eclipse, the car would still be going strong. I gambled with not replacing the timing belt on a 95 Neon with 183,000 miles because all the miles on that car were highway.

You could replace the starter and see if that resolves the problem. If the problem is resolved then the starter was bad. If you continue to have the problem with a new starter, then the engine has probably locked up.

I have had good luck with locked up engines using a lock smith. Try Pop-a-Lock
