that's so totally true. I was reading the Charlie Bone series, and thinking it was a great book, but it's probably the most copycat book ever...

There is no such thing as an original story. Everything takes from something else.

If you want to be so silly as to claim that Charlie Bone is ripping off Harry Potter because of a few similarities, here's another one:

Matilda discovered she has magical powers. Harry does, too.
Matilda befriends a special teacher who helps her a lot. Harry has Dumbledore.
Matilda has an evil instructor bent on punishing students. Harry has Snape.
Matilda has evil relatives. Harry has the Dursleys.
Matilda uses her new found talent to stop the evil teacher and help the good one. Harry fights Voldemort to help the Order.

And Matilda's author died in 1990...a few years before Harry Potter was finished, so Matilda was clearly written long before Mr. Potter was born.

The basic theme to a young adult novel is: youth lives; youth encounters trouble; youth discovers abilities previously unknown; youth uses new abilities to overcome their trouble and grow as a person; the end.

If they seem similar, fine. They can. Just look for what makes them different.

I haven't read the particular books that you mentioned, but I'm not at all surprised that there are other books that use the same themes and topics that are written about in the Harry Potter series.

Evil relatives, magic, enemies at school, magic wands, and so forth are not new concepts and many books and movies were written about them long before Rowling penned Potter. There are very few (if any) original ideas left out there in the world, and all writers have influences and inspiration from other books. Shakespeare's plays, for instance, can be directly tied back to older mythology, plays, and stories.

What's important to me is that the author takes the topic in an entertaining and fresh direction.
