Gaia is a web based game like neopets except that you control your character not a pet.
The currency used in gaia is call gold and you need them in order to buy clothings for your avatar.
In gaia, there are games like jigsaw, blackjack, slots, words bump and fishing which will let you earn golds or item which you can exchange for items.
There are contests in gaia like your avatar or your home. You actually get to buy a house in gaia and decorate them with items that you can buy in there.
Every month, there will be a release of a donation letter in which it will give you a choice of 2-3 items on the 15th of each month. Each donation letter cost US$2.50. It is not compulsory to get them but they give you rare stuffs which you can't get from the npc.
The activity that most people on gaia do is chatting in the forum.
It is not a game but more like a web based site to meet people and get to know more friends.

Maplestory basically is what you're saying. Friendly community, customizable appearance, emoticons, messenger built IN GAME, and quests and parties built into it for hours of fun. You are your avatar in that game.
