anime is Japanese animation. Basically animated shows or cartoons that were created in Japan, for a Japanese audience.
They traditionally are alot different then other cartoon from other countries due to the different animation style and how the characters are drawn (larget eyes, detailed shadowing, vivid hair and eye colors) as well as the fact that in Japan, broadcasting laws are more lenient so there can be slight nudity, strong language, blood and violent in TV aired anime.
The story telling is also different since much anime is story based in that each episode connects to the last one and creates one big story instead of each episode being a different story each time.
Anime is also genrally animated shows based off of manga (japanese comic books) video games, computer games, novels and toys. Most anime TV shows aren't just made from a script someone wrote up like alot of American cartoons but rather are based off of a media that is already available and popular.
Here is an online defintion for anime if you want more information on it:

I'm surprised you and your friends don't know much about anime. Anime is mostly cartoons originating from Japan. Anime is a lot of things, video games, TV shows, comics, etc. But it shares some similar characteristics. Large eyes, the ability to incredible feats of human strength (like lifting a sword much bigger than the character, ability to defy gravity and the laws of physics when it suits the storyline, . A show that contains a scene of a character's head growing to ginormous size compared to the person they are yelling at is defiantly anime. You might be familar with the old cartoons called Astro Boy and Speed Racer. These are some of the first animes released to American audiences. Shows such as Pokemon, Naruto, and Yugi-Oh are anime, geared for younger audiences. Shows such as Inuyasha, Gundam Wing and Evangelion are anime, geared towards teenagers. Then you have those geared towards adults, which i won't get into. American companies have recently been developing their own anime television shows, the result beign Totally Spies, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Teen Titans. These contain characteristics of animes but are not full blown anime. Also you have the video games. Final Fantasy, Pokemon and Golden Sun come to mind. Hope this helped!

It's a form of cartoons which are basically the animated versions of Japanese manga novels (like comic books, but longer and a much different art style). That's about the easiest description I can give you, some people will probably give you a long, in-depth history on it or something. XD

Technically anime refers to all animation but its pretty much just japanese animation lik
Dragonball Z
sailormoon
pokemon
inuyasha
Naruto
You can pretty much tell anime from american cartoons by the large eyes and the fact that they look more realistic.

A japanese animation. The story line is usually much more mature than an american cartoon though.

Anime is an oversaturated medium in which vastly unoriginal shows are formulated, now don't get me wrong, I love the work of Miyazaki. Otherwise, it is impossible to not know what anime is, considering how much it is present in the media.

Anime is just a nerdy name for Japanese cartoons/animation. Calling Japanese Cartoons "Anime" makes you a weaboo.
