I am afraid I must disagree with you on this point, A dip-thong is the
combination of two vowel sounds where you start the sound on the tip of your tongue and transfer it to the back of the tongue; so that anyone listening to you speaking would think that they heard only one vowel. They are spoken in a single syllable, in a quick tongue movement. They are more often than not ae or oe, but sound like oi oy as in boil and boy. An example of straight ea is real
and oi foil. The only way constants could could be confused with vowel dip thongs is if you spoke English with an accent, like for example the Boston American accent, but then you would have ng and th. Because the accent changes the sounds of the syllables they sound like constants when in fact they are vowels.
Also we do not pronounce Gross `grous` we pronounce it `grows`th`
I am not surprised that one of the other answerer's didn`t know what you were `on about` !
Are you an American ? If so that would explain it....... Because of the accent sounds.
PS. I was taught this at school in English Language Lessons.

There are too many to list. However, here are some:
ball, bell, bill, doll, dull. Generally short vowel sounds can be followed by double consonants while long vowel sounds can't.
In phonetics, a diphthong (also gliding vowel) (Greek δίφθογγος, "diphthongos", literally "with two sounds," or "with two tones") is a monosyllabic vowel combination involving a quick but smooth movement from one vowel to another, often interpreted by listeners as a single vowel sound or phoneme. While "pure" vowels, or monophthongs, are said to have one target tongue position, diphthongs have two target tongue positions. Pure vowels are represented in the International Phonetic Alphabet by one symbol: English "sum" as /sʌm/, for example. Diphthongs are represented by two symbols, for example English "same" as /seɪm/, where the two vowel symbols are intended to represent approximately the beginning and ending tongue positions.
