I need a tenor saxophone so I can stop having to rent a school sax. I love the looks of a Cannonball. Yet the Yamaha has a greater life time for the money, or so I'm told. What brand is better to buy if I'm looking for something professional to go into jazz?

I think that Yamaha makes about the best Saxophones out there, for the price and also for the intonation and well-rounded tone. Get yourself a Yamaha Custom, or intermediate model if you want to spend a little less and still get a quality product.

There is no "best" saxophone. At the professional level of all brands of saxophones, the difference are very minor (key shaping or slight position adjustments on pinky and palm keys) and make little to no difference to most players. If you are seriously looking, go try out as many different pro level horns you can get your hands and mouth on, and then buy the one you like. Professional players use Selmer, Yamaha, Cannonball, Yanigasawa, and Keilwerth for the most part, but that is all based on who pays them (e.g. someone being sponsored by Yamaha) or their own personal choice.

The best brand for all saxes is Selmer and Yamaha. I recommend Selmer.

once you've the money and are up for the project, truthfully do the bassoon! Double reeds are a lot exciting! you'll want a instructor although... besides, back to manufacturers, the most suitable variety of a bassoon you would possibly want to get might want to be Fox.
