If your going to go down the administrative career path, then aim for Executive Assistant. Most admin workers (secretary's) start off on an ok wage, which increases as you expand your skills. For example: someone who answers phones and posts letters for a small business will get paid less than someone who answers phones, does mail, makes appointments, and does data entry... they in turn will get paid less than someone who can do all that as well as organise a personal schedule and domestic + overseas travel. Generally, the better paid your employer is, the better paid you will be. As an Exec Assistant you often accompany your employer on o/seas travel and basically run their life - you'll work really hard but the perks are brilliant - AIM HIGH! And don't think it's all about being a "people person" you have to be smarter and more organised than alot of people out there who are just "nice".

How much you get paid depends on what company you are a secretary for. Also, what city you live/work in. If you are a good secretary in a large company, you may be able to climb the ladder some--could be an administrative assistant, or if you work in a legal office, you could become a paralegal in time. It's a career that you can master in high school if you're motivated, and you won't need to spend a lot of money on college.

It all depends on where you work, but secretaries are becoming phased out as more and more supervisors are becoming proficient on the computers.

I used to work in this field, but went back for my bachelor's degree. Here in Michigan, an inexperienced secretary might earn 8-10 per hour IF they have good typing skills and good telephone technique. But to make more money, you need some specialized skills that relate to that field.

Your better option is to get training to become an Administrative Assistant. Many of those positions are even going to people with Bachelor's degrees, since an AA is often someone who is the right hand of the supervisor and assists in whatever the supervisor needs help with. Those jobs pay a lot more. For more information, go to the department of Labor's website at http://online.onetcenter.org/

Good luck to you!

It depends on the industry, as well as, the city where a secretary works.

Good secretaries can move up the corporate ladder if they are ambitious and interested in becoming an executive.

Legal Secretaries, in large cities, make the most money.

It can pay poorly, it can pay well. A lot depends on your skills, and how hard you work, and where you work, and who you work for. If you get a job working for a low-level administrator in a large company, you'll probably start out at little more than minimum wage. If you are a private secretary to a major executive, and you help him do his work well, you can expect much more.
