Everyone knows who Einstein was. Everyone knows his famous equation "E=mc^2". Everyone has heard of Einstein's Theory of Relativity.
What some don't know:
*There are technically two Theories of Relativity--General Relativity and Special Relativity. E=mc^2 comes from special.
Now, with all this widely known stuff about Einstein, what did he win the Nobel Prize for?
Yup, you got it, his work on the Photo-electric Effect. [sort of a lead in to things like solar cells] What, you didn't guess that? You probably guessed Relativity, huh?
* What does "E=mc^2" mean? Can only an "Einstein" understand it? What does it describe? Well, a relatively [sorry, couldn't resist] close example is the Sun. The equation describes the release of energy from nuclear reactions. Even though it takes 4 hydrogen atoms to get fused together to form one helium atom, a helium aom has less mass than 4 hydrogens. The missing matter was converted to energy and released in quanta of electromagnetic radiation such as photons. Most people don't realise they see a system described by the equation everyday---well, if it's sunny.
