Assuming that you do not want platitudes like "health is more important than money", there are a few very rich people in The Philippines, but many are very poor. When I first visited in the 1980s, my wife, who is Korean and lived through the Korean War, remarked when she saw the corrigated steel lean-tos that she had never seen such poverty. Of course, there are poor people everywhere (even the USA), but The Philippines, India, sub-Saharan Africa, Bangladesh, etc. rank at the bottom of wealth distribution. The Filipino middle class is smaller as a percentage than the Filipino poor; something unusual in most countries.

Yet, Filipinos are blessed with a good climate (other than a few typhoons), good spirits, a work ethic, and compassion for others.

In money, many are poor. In relationships, many are rich.

By global standards, 85% live in poverty, maybe 10% in relative comfort and the rest in obnoxious wealth. The Filipino wealthy makes it a point to NOT share or give back the money they siphoned off their poor counterparts.

In contrast, in the USA, 5% live in absolute wealth, 85% in relative comfort and 10% live beneath the "poverty line".

These figures are rough approximations.

The definition of poverty in the USA defines a household which makes less than $14,000 (P700,000) a year, some still have an a/conditioned home to live in, send ALL their kids to school for free, eat AT LEAST 3 meals a day, have 2 or more TVs and at least one car! They also enjoy significant monetary subsidies from their government, generous health care, and pay next to no taxes.

As you can see, compared to that standard of US poverty, the Philippine poor (and even their middle class) live in practical squalor.

Well, we are rich in a way. We are full of marine goods that we can export. That's one thing. Lumber, and all that stuff. We can be rich, but the corrupt, self-absorbent, selfish officials' fault why we can't be succcessful. I mean, our very own undiscovered sea organisms are being descovered by french and american scientists! I mean, if our governemnt will provide money for these causes we, filipinos, ourselves will disover these critters. But, the stupid governemnt only thinks about itself.

DOWN WITH THE CORRUPT PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT!

the philippines as a country is rich but most people are financially poor.

it may have something to do with the distribution of wealth but the richest are still far from being on the top of the forbes list. however, due to the rampant corruption, there is a lot of undeclared wealth out there.

It is the same as in any country. There are a few that are very rich. There are some that are very poor.

There are more poor than there are rich.

Filipino people need to stop comparing themselves and their economy to that of the USA. I never see anybody comparing Philippines to Luxembourg or Ghana. Face it. PI will never be like USA or like Australia. I read a lot of hate mail on here towards Americans and some others who have nothing to do with your economic woes. The problem is that you people have no entrepreneurial spirit or desire to do better for yourself. Your government is never going to "help" you just the same as any country's government. The power to change lies with the people. Until you all stop relying on somebody else to send money you will never do any better. And if you spent as much effort trying to start a business as you do trying to con foreigners out of money, you might also succeed.
