I think that's taking it a little far but what y'all think. I'm just bored. I know this is a dumb question.

Well I heard that the attorney wherever this took place is strongly looking into it!

Yes, and no it's not a dumb question.

Generally, the thinking is that by playing hockey you are agreeing that fights occur, tempers flare, and you are subject to injury and the law should stay out of it.

I have no quarrel with that, EXCEPT there are limits.

You CANNOT attempt to take somebody's HEAD off, that is assault with a deadly weapon. By playing Hockey, you did NOT agree to this.

And it will send a message to future goons and help hockey.

This was not your question, but the NHL should suspend him as well FOR LIFE.

This is one of the problems that hockey has to deal with. Using a sharp stick to slash the face of a person would get you real jail time anywhere else; on the ice 5/10 game misconduct and a suspension.

Intent to injure is, not condoned, but it isn't prohibited either.

They got rid of the bench clearing brawls, how hard would it be to have a "one strike your out" provision i.e. anytime you use your stick or skate with intent to injure, your career is forfeit. Don't tell me the union would fight it either, those wimps caved in on salary cap during the lockout.

Didn't they try to do this out west a few years ago ... Marty McSorley right?

Anyway, I was watching the game and saw it happen and I'm watching a replay of it on the channel 11 news right now and wow ... I'll tell you ... Simon could have killed Ryan Hollweg had the stick not caught Hollweg's chin first and instead got him directly in the throat. He could have crushed his windpipe or even slit his throat.

So I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Fined and suspended and that's all. There was no major damage done to the other player. He will playing in tomorrow's game, so I think he is fine.
It would be a totally different story if he was injured for life and that he couldn't ever play hockey again.
Retaliation is all part of the sport of hockey. That's why we love the sport, Violence and fighting is good :-)

ummm....ya. that's kinda a stupid question. he deserves to be fined and suspended for a reasonable amount of time for high-sticking Hollweg in the face, but court? That's a little extreme.

no but i do think he should be banned from the sport.. the hit to him wasn't anything big. if they let him play again he's likely to blow up again. it was a check, and simon just lost his mind! he could have smashed his nose into his head and killed him.. even the meanest nastiest players throw their sticks down before a fight. he broke an unsaid rule and shouldn't be allowed to play
