I heard that record companies will pay top 40 stations to play their songs, in order to make them popular, so that people will buy their albums and such. Is there any truth to this?

it's called "payola" and is illegal...however...a few record companies were charged in new yourk state a couple of years ago and i think the case is still pendind...so, yeah..it does happen...but noe a massive scale...

No. Many years ago some record companies did it. It's illegal.
