Anthony G. Brown: Biography
Anthony G. Brown is Maryland's eighth Lieutenant Governor of Maryland.

From an early age, Lt. Governor Brown has been guided by the values of commitment, service and love of country instilled by his parents and forged by experience.

He was born in Huntington, New York on November 21, 1961, to his Jamaican father and Swiss mother. At the dinner table, his parents eschewed the opportunities available to all Americans and the importance of service to the community.

Anthony did not just hear his parents, he listened and began to work toward the goal of service to others. In high school, he had the honor of being the first African American student government president. He took his next step toward success and service to his community when, as a student at Harvard University, he joined the Army ROTC program. In addition, he served on the Student Advisory Committee at the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government. After graduating *** laude in 1984, Anthony was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army and graduated first in his Army flight school class. He served as an active duty helicopter pilot with the 4 th Combat Aviation Brigade, 3 rd Infantry Division in Europe.

After completing a tour of active duty in Germany, Anthony entered Harvard Law School where he honed his advocacy skills. Anthony graduated from law school in 1992, at which time he clerked for then-Chief Judge Eugene Sullivan on the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Anthony continued as a member in the Army Reserves and has completed short tours of duty in Panama and Canada.

His years of pro bono work with the law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering, Hale and Dorr LLP, and as an advocacy lawyer, convinced Anthony of his need to serve the residents of Maryland even further. In 1998, he was elected to the House of Delegates from Prince George's County. Anthony served as Majority Whip from 2004 to 2007 and served on the Joint Committee on Legislative Ethics, the Judiciary Committee, the Economic Matters Committee, the Joint Technology Oversight Committee and many others during his tenure.

In 2005, Anthony was deployed as a Reservist to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In Baghdad, Fallujah, Kirkuk, and Basra, he worked with local and military officials to deliver humanitarian assistance and rebuild a war-torn country.

After the O'Malley/Brown team claimed victory in the 2006 election, Anthony became the first member of the Maryland House of Delegates ever to be directly elected to the Lieutenant Governor's Office.

Anthony and his wife Patricia have two children and live in Mitchellville. They attend St. Joseph's Church in Largo.
