For some reason I find myself pondering the statements of that idiot Ted "Bridge to Nowhere" Stevens.

I contend that not only is it not a series of tubes, but it actually is like a lorry/truck (well, the individual packets, with the Internet being a network of roads).

However, some have defended his statement as a reasonable analogy for "lay people."

Therefore, I put the question to Y!A. I hope it doesn't take three days for your internet to get to me.

Some would say "tubes" others "wires" some even "pipes". The whole plumbing analogy is a simple way for most people to think about how the internet is built. If you want to really know you need to go to the source, one is the IETF, but their documents are really really dry for someone who isn't in the industry. Another book I sometimes recommend is from Cisco Press called Internet Routing Architectures, this is pretty much considered to be the bible for those in the field.

The explanation given by Ted Stevens was obviously all wrong, clearly he didn't know what he was talking about fully. To be honest though and in a very general sense the internet really is just a series of data circuits, if you want to call them tubes, be my guest.

Think of it like the postal system delivering mail. You have an address and so does everyone else that sends and receives 'packages'. When you want something, you send a 'request' through the mail (internet). The internet (postal system) sends information 'package' back to the address specified on the request.

FIRST: The internet is driven by electricity (bits annd bytes) so it can't be a truck.
SECOND: It is a network (spiders web - good)
THIRD: It is a "cloud" of spider webs with each spider web connected to another spiderweb.

SO: I would not say "tubes" ... I would say "wires"

Think of it more as a spiders web without the sticky bits, no wait a minute ... just like a spider's web

It seems fairly similar to the phone system to me. But I never heard the original quote.
