If you OWN an automatic, can you (competently) drive a stick?

Age / sex ?

Of my 5 cars (three here in Hawaii [including wife's] and two on mainland): Saturn Vue 5 speed, PT Cruiser 5 speed, GMC Sonoma automatic (only because I bought it used), Ford Ranger 5 speed, Mustang GT 5 speed.

Manual (stick shift) gives the feeling of far more control, I find. Driving my mum's automatic mini metro provided some of the scariest moments of my life (selecting neutral on an automatic stick is weird, sitting on the footbrake is weird, delayed acceleration is scary and no engine braking is purely terrifying).

My manual peugeot 205 does me just fine, I dread the day I next have to drive an automatic.

Why not? I grew up driving sticks. My present car, truck, RV and old (68) Mustang are Auto. However my grandson's Mustang is a stick and my son's pickup is a stick. I drive both occasionally without any problem. If you learn how to drive a stick then it's like riding a bike. You never forget, just need to refresh yourself occasionally.

No problem. I've been driving trucks for so long, I can do it in my sleep. (And I usually do.) There are a lot more gears in a truck also. One that I drove had 16 speeds, 2 shifters on the floor. Most only had 13 though.
