Well I have a child with Down syndrome (I prefer not to use the term "Down syndrome kid" because he is a child first...the Down syndrome is just something he has) and I can't wait until he is old enough to learn to cook! I look forward to making cookies and cakes and things with him. The criteria I will use for him is no different than what I would expect from any child. I will teach him about kitchen safety, he will know what he can and cannot do without adult supervision and I'll spend lots of time showing him how to do it.

Honestly, I don't see any difference in teaching him cooking than any other child. Just because he has some developmental delays doesn't mean he can't do things...it just means he might take a little longer to acquire skills.

Some day I fully expected to be greeted on Mother's Day with a breakfast he made just for me!!!!

yes I would, because I would spend the time to teach him. my son is only 3 yrs old right now, but he is very interested in cooking. of course I don't let him use the stove but he does help with stirring and adding ingredients. there is no reason why I shouldn't continue to teach him if it is something he likes to do. just because he has DS doesn't mean he is any different from other kids! sure he does learn slower than other kids, but he does learn and I think he has a better retention than my teenager at times...lol please don't take offense to this but, you can't classify all down syndrome kids the same....they are just like you and I and have different levels of development and intelligence. so what would be fine for one child might not work with another. that is up to the parents to determine.

sure if that child had the mental capabilities to do so, it would be the same if i asked you, "If you had a mother would you trust her cooking?"

Probably not.
Because:
knives, heat, they could spill things (hot things)
but if you are supervising, it might make them feel good to try and cook (ONLY IF YOU ARE SUPERVISING!!!)

FIRST OF ALL, I WOULD BE IN THE KITCHEN WITH ANY ONE OF MY CHILDREN THAT IS COOKING...DONT HAVE TO HAVE DS. AFTER I TEACH THEM WHAT TO DO IN THE KITCHEN, OF COURSE I WOULD TRUST THEM.

If he/she is capable and someone's supervising, I think they should. Maybe something easy to start with though.
