It's been ages since I read it, but I believe he was shot. At some point, he remembered other people who had rebelled against Big Brother; they were re-educated to love Big Brother, then shot. (That way, Big Brother won; there were no martyrs, and no second chance.)
Remember after his reeducation, he had no job, or no real job (I don't remember). Society had no use for him. They just didn't want him to successfully resist Big Brother, so they broke him and made him love BB.

yes he is shot...the line is "the longhoped-for bullet was entering his brain.
He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother"
....the point is that all big brother wants to do is change the way you think...once they've done that, they've won and you are of no more use to them

You saw the movie and didn't read the book right? What do I care... yeah, they kill him after he is brainwashed into loving his country. 2 + 2 = 5.

I can't remember since its been a while but I always thought he did. They shot him, he went down. He looks up at a poster of big brother and he felt nothing but love for big brother.
Atleast thats how I always remember the ending. And I like it that way.

I dont think he was shot...I can't quite remember. He was reassimilated into society, though, because at the end he was saying that he loved Big Brother.
