Is it overheating, or a virus or what? Anything to be done? Thank you for any advice, software, etc.

Honestly it could be either. If you invest in a coolpad (small pad with fans that sits underneath your laptop) usually $30 at any electronics retailer. This would tackle the heat issue. With a virus check out McAfee Antivirus, it is by far the best antivirus software that I have ever used.

maybe u have too much stuff loaded on your lap top. i would try to delete all the stuff that u dont use to give u as much space as u need to do things and speed up your computer. j
also, there is a good chance that if any of these things that u deleted had a virus in it, it will be gone. the more stuff that u download from the internet the better the chance of it slowing down and shutting off. so try when u delete things, to delete more of the things u got off the internet. that should help.

You would have to give us more information as to what you are doing when it shuts down.

You could make sure that the vents on the back of the computer are not being obstructed by anything. In other words only use it on flat surfaces. Carpeting, blankets, pants and various other things that people set their laptops on can cause the vents to become blocked, not allowing any of the heat to escape.

More information would be key.

Hi. Usually that indicates overheating. The CPU and fan collect dust. Clean then by using a can of 'air' from most electronics stores.

Mine was doing that because I had gotten a worm. It was a nightmare, I finally had to erase the drive and reinstall everything. I hope yours is just overheating and needs to be cleaned. Good luck.

If it's a Dell inspiron, mine does that too. I got one of those pads with fans built in and now it doesn't anymore. Also, you can clean the fan vent - you may find it full of dust.
