Is this drive that you attached to the USB adapter brand new?
If so, you will need to partition and format the drive before it can be used by the computer.
To do this, you need to go to the start menu and type "diskmgmt.msc" in the "Run" dialog of the start menu.
This will pull up a window that will show the drives that are installed on the computer. If the adapter is working properly, you will see the drive on this screen.
Then all you have to do is right click on the new drive and go to "format" and then select how big you want the partiton to be.
Make sure you are selecting the correct drive otherwise you could inadvertantly format the wrong drive.

If it shows in the system tray then the system is seeing it. Open My Computer and look to see if there is a Mass Storage Device below the drive area. Because it's attached as USB it will not show up like a hard drive.
If it's there but you can not access it, it may need to be formatted if its new.
Here is what Newer Tech had to say in the manual...
"Basic Troubleshooting:
If the device is not registering with your computer, try rebooting with the device attached and powered on. If this does not resolve the issue, try disconnecting the power, detach, then reattaching the drive several times, before reattaching the power. If you have any further difficulty with the Newer Technology Universal Drive Adapter, please contact our customer service department. For contact methods visit: http://newertech.com/support"

You need to install the driver for your specific hardware. It may be necessary to download the driver from the website of the company that made your drive unless it is either on a disk that came with it or it is already on your computer. Re-start your computer without the drive attached. Go to My Computer then to Control Panel then to Add New Hardware. Plug in the drive. Click Add New Hardware. Follow the prompts and the new device will either be in a list or you will need to tell the add new hardware installer where the driver is. If it is not on the list and you don't have a disk, download it from the manufacturers website then start that process over.

Im not exactly sure what you mean by Hard Drive. If there was a problem with your hard drive, you wouldn't be able to do anything on your computer. If your talking about an external hard drive, did you try installing it? I'm not familiar with external hard drives. Did it come with a CD? If so enter the CD and try and install it. If you lost the CD, is it from Dell? If it is, you can download the driver from http://support.dell.com/ and then clicking on Drivers and Downloads.
Good Luck.

Turn off your external harde drive.
Turn on your computer first.
After bootup completed turn ON your USB external hard drive.
You will see your hard drive.
I never can have the computer bootup period if my external hard drive is powerd up.
For some weired reason i dont have to worry about that on my desktop computer, only laptop refuses the external hard drive while booting up.. something to do with the CMOS setting I guess.
I am assuming you are using XP.

Hi. Set up a folder on the external drive and copy the files you want to it. Then clear them from your internal drive.

well, if i were u i would try to delete all the un necessary stuff in your drive to make more space even if u have enough room and dont use something. it will make your computer go faster and it wont give your computer so many bugs to slow it down and have to restart.
