First, listen, listen, listen to all that the customer has to say.

Think on his/her side.

Ask what the customer want instead.

If it's a situation where both parties can benefit from the change, why not settle it with a big smile, and say welcome back.

Simply apologize and find out exactly what they are dissatified about. Then it is in your power to correct it, then do so. And ask them what they would like to do about the situation at hand.

Ask your supervisor for her techniques, she will enjoy helping you. But, first and foremost do not play their game. Be quiet. Maintain eye contact. If you get a second of air tell them you are there to serve them if they are willing to be patient you will.
