Sailor Moon is a classic in terms of Magical Girl anime shows, I enjoyed the series also.
As for why it was canceled, in terms of the broadcast on Cartoon Network, it really didn't get a lot of viewership. Which unfortunatly is the case with most girl orientated anime , they dont' have as much viewers as the boy orientated anime. So this is why it was on and off on the chanel and then stopped after SuperS.
About a year later or so the American liscence, not the broadcasing lisence expired, and none of the American anime distrobuting companies or any other company decided to re-lisence the series, particuallaly because it was an older show by then and not as much interest in it and because the original Japanese company that owned it really didn't want to lisense off the final season (sailor stars) due to the nature of the show (boys that changed into girls) feeling they didn't want to tarnish the Sailor Moon image that had been created in the U.S. But again, no company re lisenced it and because of that, no one owned the rights to the show, and a show that no company owns cannot be aired on TV.
As for how to see the series there are a few ways, as one listed you can go on crunchy roll and watch it as well as youtube.
http://www.youtube.com or http://www.crunchyroll.com/ and serach sailor moon.
If you don't like the streaming videos on these sites which usually are on small screen boxes and not always the best quality, you can always download it by torrent using (bittorent or azureus) from sites such as baka updates and tokyo toshokan
http://www.baka-updates.com or http://www.tokyotosho.com
and put in the search sailor moon.
Best of luck.

I remember it, it was the very first anime I ever watched, practically grew up on it, haha. It was cancelled because the license to air the series expired and was never renewed. You can watch the japanese version with english subtitles at crunchyroll.com, you have to sign up first though, it's free. It has all 200 hundred episodes made and a couple of movies. I think the japanese version is better because the ones aired in America were heavily censored due to the fact that there was a lot of content not appropriate for child viewing.

They didn't really cancel it they showed all the seasons except for the fifth season stars. They couldn't show that on cartoon network because it wouldn't be appropriate for smaller children because of some of the culture differences. In fact sailormoon did really well on cartoon network so it wasn't because of the ratings they could have shown reruns til 03 but they let their license run out and gave it the boot so they could draw more attention to that idiotic hamster cartoon Hamtaro.
Oh and if you don't mind reading subtitles then you can download the episodes here http://k1anime.com/

They cancelled it because of the Sailor Stars season, the Sailor Stars are guys who turn into girls when they become Sailor Stars, they felt that would really confuse kids and plus Sailor Uranus and Neptune are really lesbos but in the American version in the past seasons they made them cousins. In the Sailor Stars version it stood out more that they were lesbos and they really didin't know how to edit that out. So they just cancelled it.
I loved Sailor Moon until I found out the two characters were lesbos...it disgusted me.
