Yes I believe it.
I have just spent the last hour reading how people like me cannot be "true" hockey fans, because we would rather see a Crosby goal or a Brodeur save on the news than Simon try to take someone's head off!!!!!!!!
Simon needs to be suspended for LIFE. This is a NO-BRAINER.
It would hurt Simon.
It would hurt the Islanders
It would help hockey.
Unless you are Bob Lobaw, because you would rather see 40 people brawl then play hockey.
And for saying this, I supposedly don't know hockey.
I give up!!!!!!

I am a long time Islander fan who was at this game. What Chris Simon did was absolutely horrible and wrong. There are no excuses that can be made for what he did. Some fault also has to rest with the officials, who let this game get out of hand well before this incident. There were missed calls on both sides all night; blatant penalties that were ignored. When this happens, players begin to feel that they have to take action themselves. Right before Simon committed this horrific act, while he was facing the corner boards trying to play the puck, Hollweg checked him from behind, hard into the boards. Contrary to what most are saying, checking someone into the boards who's back is turned to you is not a "clean hit." Simon was obviously shaken up on the play and the fact that no penalty was called on this sent him over the edge. Again, what he did was inexcusable, but if the officials hadn't let the game get out of hand in the first place and had made appropriate calls (including on Hollweg for checking from behind), this might have never happened. While I absolutely agree that Simon must be punished for his actions and that there must be consequences for these incidents, we also need to take a look at the lackadaisical officiating which permits things like this to take place.

I haven't read anyone actually defending him. What he did is malicious. I will defend comments like he is not an athlete or for that matter, I don't know if I would say he is a punk. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Rangers players have been known to do some pretty dirty stuff too.
I will say again, the law has no place in the NHL. If a player attacked a fan then OK but these guys know what they signed up for and get payed huge $$ for what they do. They know there is a good chance they might get a stick to the choppers, be it accidentally or intentionally. What Simon did is wrong and he is paying the price. I bet that Hollweg will not want charges. Moore was the exception.
For those of you who think that since you can't do this on the street, why should you get away with it on the ice, please know this, can you slam someone into the boards on the street? No. Different set of rules. Crap happens in the flow of the game when tempers flare. Simon should have just grabbed him and smacked the snot bubbles out of him. He made a mistake. He is human. Please don't compare this to someone walking into a store and hitting someone in the head with a stick. It is MUCH different. Wrong yes, but he (and his team) will pay the price.

I'm note defending Simon for what he did but I've played this game for many many years and i know one thing if the ref's let the game get out of hand then the players get very made when calls aren't being called and then this kind of things happened if seen it many times playing hockey and the ref's need to have total control of the game for this kind of things to not happened. Simon is a taught guy and he was getting mad throughout the game and when he got hit from behind and no call was made then he took it in his own hands which was clearly the wrong move.

The league needs to be consistant about blows to the head with a stick and they were very wishy washy when Ray Emery smacked that guy in the face with a stick. He shouldn't be playing. It was deliberate and they should have sent a message that ANY player who does it gets a big suspension. To suspend only the tough guys for long periods and ignore the others is not consistant.
If you injure a guy on a flagrant foul your suspension should be the length of time the other players is out PLUS at least 10 more games.

Its too bad cuz as a player he started to score goals and up his game a little. I think he retialiated stupidly and irresponsibly. Its not like he had his stick to high and accidently hit him - he did it purposly and that should be eliminated from the game. But unfortunatly people still like that stuff and will always defend it.

well..im not gonna defend him because i dont know enough information on his behalf to have an argument, but he is an nhl player..and you cant say it doesnt take talent to be in the nhl. ANYONE who can put on their own equipment and skate and ouck handle good enough to be in the nhl..has a talent.

People defended Bertuzzi, people still defend Bertuzzi. It's sad for hockey that events like this occur and fans get behind the person who does it.
