I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and the battery no longer maintains charges. If I unplug the ac power, the computer shuts off within 5 minutes. I want to buy a new battery but I dont want to buy the same one from dell again. Can I buy a battery from any manufacturer or does it have to be from dell? Dell suggests a 53 WHr 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Primary Battery.

I highly recommend not using refurbished laptop batteries; contact Dell online and talk to a customer support rep. The chances that another manufacturer's battery carrying the specific voltages and current for your Dell are slim and it is a gamble that a third party vendor is not using used batteries with questionable life spans.

Good luck.

You should be able to use any manufacturer's battery that complies with Dell's recommendations of the specs. You might even try buying an 8-cell Li-Ion battery if it fits for longer battery times.

I'm pretty sure that you don't have to buy one from Dell, although it's extremely recommended. Try asking Dell via live chat... though they would probably tell you to get a Dell one for selling purposes.
