I once did an experiment that involved killing mold. The first step was growing the mold. That involved taking some old bread, moistening it, and placing the bag in a warm dark area. Then you would take various chemicals and treat various slices. Use plain water as the control chemical. Then add things such as solutions of slaked lime, vinegar, salt, baking soda, etc. You would need some research on mold, some hypotheses, documentation of the experiment, and the results.

If you miss the written work on whatever science project, there is no chance of the project making it past the first science fair, even if it wins a ribbon. (Learned the hard way.) Plus you would need the type of project to be whatever is most likely to make it to the next level. Generally, the project is to be either physical or biological, and to me, it seemed that there was a bias towards biological science projects. I saw a number of projects that involved electronics, electricity, etc, and for some reason, while they usually won ribbons, they would never be invited to the district level competition.

Test a law or a theory. Do the three laws of motion actually apply to common day events? Can you see animals using camoflague in your backyard? What types of bird feeders and bird food are the most effective? Does the sun or moon rise and set in the same place on the horizon or move across the horizon and back? What conducts electricity? What liquids take the most amount of time to freeze solid? Any guesses why? What is the difference between different sources of light, or a flashlight and a laser? How do simple machines work?
