They don't understand it yet because it's a new experience. Their scope of life is just broadening from their child-like perspective to that of an adult.

Besides, even adults misread some emotions.

Just after puberty, and no responsibility yet, they are yearning for learning.

cuz we have too much estrogen and testosterone to think logically.
