if you are married to someone by common law you get all the benifits of a legal marriage however North Carolina is not a common law state so No you cant put the other partner on the medical insurance.
Common law marriage or marriage by consent is not recog-nized in North Carolina. However,common law marriage may be recognized by North Carolina if the parties have engaged in behavior in another state which would be recognized by that state as common law marriage. Marriage between individuals of the sameg ender is not recognized as valid in North Carolina, regardless of where the marriage was obtained.

Given that it is illegal (for now) to "play house" whilst being unmarried in NC I would venture to suggest that it cannot be done, but some smartypants may have found a way around this so you woud be wise to check.

Incidentally, even if you are married, anything other than the missionary position is also illegal in NC, but that is a totally different topic.

I don't know. But in California there is no common law any more. If you are not married, then the law does not consider you a legal couple.
