I grew up just 5 minutes from the Main River in Germany. My best friends and I would spend all our days there, swimming, sometimes almost drowning or just having fun. That is where I learned to swim. It was either swim or drown. Life was simpler back then.....lol
But I love nothing better than going through the mountains, finding a quick running stream and sitting there listening to the bubbling of the water. I find that very soothing.

I grew up in Los Angles, CA but during the summer we would stay up in Wofferd Heights and I would listen to Tilley Creek.
I have been away from there for over 40 years, but I still hear that little creek, when I need to find a peaceful place to go for rest at the end of a hectic week.

There were no rivers for me on my little 3 mile island, but I can still hear the waves crashing. Certain pleasant smells, like baking bread or cookies, or a soft, misty rain, has an indescribable comfort. Certain colognes unexpectedly remind me of people I had not thought of or seen for ages. Maya Angelou said something about words being forgotten but the how feelings towards people are remembered. Guess it applies here as well.

I grew up around the Niangua and Gasconade River's in MO. So I can totally relate. I miss floating down the river on an inner tube.

Well in your memory of a bygone age it'll always be there even in midst of a crowed city.I too was raised close by a river, but it's sounds seldom penetrated into the house. I suppose they did but were attuned out for the norman hullabaloo of family life. But your right one can surmise that peaceful tranquility of yesteryear

The Missouri River in North Dakota is very cold. I don't think I would ever have been able to have children had I swam in the river. But we enjoyed fishing in it, especially the tail race below the dam.
