Neither. The kind popped in a popcorn machine is the bomb!

If I want decent popcorn with no mess and little preparation time, I go with microwave. I haven't had the stove-popped kind since I was about 5, but the taste is wonderful.
If I want to make my own popcorn, I use my corn popper. Don't get the air popping kind unless you are going to spray oil or pour butter on it. The salt just rolls right off, and the salt is what makes good popcorn great. You'll want one where you can put oil or butter at the bottom of the popper (oil gets hotter without burning). That is my absolute favorite kind of popcorn. The taste is unbeatable.
Sometimes I will also put a single kernel on the bottom and wait for it to pop. That way you know the popper is hot enough to dissolve sugar without scorching the bottom (I add about a teaspoon, pouring very slowly). Then add kernels and watch them pop. The combination of sweet and salty is VERY addictive.

We left Jiffy Pop and now use Microwave popcorn all the time.

As much as I have fond memories of Jiffy Pop igniting on the stove, I have to go with microwave. No muss, no fuss.
