The problem is that there have been a small minority of cases where prosecutors or police have broken the law to gain a conviction in a capital case. This leads to changes in the law to try and make the system water-tight. For an example of this, see the link below and type in Alan Gell in the search box.
So, instead of doing as was done in the UK before capital punishment was abolished there (three weeks after the trial in many cases) we have numerous appeals, some of them mandatory, in the hope we can avoid executing an innocent person.
All this, of course, places incredible strain on the courts and all involved in a particular case. It costs over $1,000,000 more to prosecute a death penalty case than one where life is not at stake. To see the results of the death penalty in North Carolina take a look at the second link below. See how many people go through the system only to get life imprisonment anyway or to die before the sentence can be carried out. The death penalty is actually a waste of money. It is cheaper to lock them up and throw away the key.

Most of the time prisoners "sit on Death Row" for such a long time because of the appeals process. In most states, it is mandatory for the defense attorney to file an appeal for a guilty verdict.

I even have consistently been an propose for letting the punishment in wonderful condition the crime. possibly instead of the loss of life penalty, this scumbag ought to have his spinal cord severed and compelled to stay as a quadriplegic. of direction that still leaves the difficulty of being shot interior the face 4 circumstances by ability of a .40 high quality at close selection and enduring each and all of the surgical procedures that Officer Gonzalez has had to stand. possibly the loss of life penalty is suitable, yet none of that rapid incredibly painless (by ability of assessment to Officer Gonzalez soreness and suffering) deadly injection, or electric powered chair. the classic chinese language had a punishment that each and daily the prisoner had a physique area bumped off, beginning with the ft and working upward. The physique area replaced into then boiled and fed to the prisoner, so as that he slowly ate himself to loss of life. no fee for nutrition to the taxpayers. merciless and unusual punishment? no longer for my area.

Our legal system is extremely biased in favor of protecting the innocent. Something noble in theory. Yet, if you are the victim of a terrible crime, it is extremely insensitive. Nevertheless, with all its terrible flaws, I'm glad we have the legal system we have.

they are allowed to appeal & until all their legal options are used, they must remain alive. i'm a "bleading heart liberal" & against the death penalty, so i'm glad this option is available.
