first, try a good tune-up, new air & fuel filters, & have your fuel injection cleaned. maybe have the computer scanned for trouble codes. you could have a bad oxygen sensor or such.

You need to put a octane booster in with your gasoline and purchase dual point spark plugs. If the octane booster does not work you may want to try a lead substitute. When the vehicle was first purchased the original owner may have used leaded fuel and burned the tops of the heads leaving holes or pits for the fuel to accumulate til the exhaust stroke. The leaded fuel may also have burned the intake valves and therefore fuel is leaking into the cylinder after the ignition and than being expelled in the exhaust stroke. Add a Teflon to the oil and hope it takes care of any pitted and chips you may have on the intake valves. Keep adding the Teflon about every three months or replace the valves. (major expense).

you may not see any smoke but when the car is running, look at the muffler and you will see (maybe a bit of) gasoline driping out. you need to do some maintenance but to pass the test you can add acetone to the gas and that will increase the octane and that helps it vaporize.

its a tricky balance because your computer might detect it and send off your check engine light and a bunch or other problems but i've seen ppl do it to keep their cars on the road.

honestly, a tune up should do the trick and help you burn more gas.

Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance.
