Ultimatley you should respect your father and not pester him. In my experience the kids get a pet and eventually I end up taking care of them even though I didn't want them to begin with.
Depending on your age - the older the better - You could ask him to go with you to a pet store and discuss pets with them. Rats are better, they don't bite like hampsters do and can they are very smart. We had two and they knew their names. If they got loose (which they do because they can figure out easily how to get out of a cage) they will come when called. Whereas a hampster will get loose, run as fast as it's lil legs will carry it and start chewing into walls and furniture and are hard to find. Rats are actually cleaner than hampsters. But please learn what responsibility you are trying to get into first. Find out how long your pets life span is so you know how long of a commitment you are making. The cage HAS to be cleaned daily!! These are pets so they do need attention!! If you are a very busy person with lil time to devot to them, get fish.
Trust me, I know where your father is coming from... I have acquired fish, rats, ferrets and a dog all from bargains and deals with my kids that they would care for them all their lives... ya, that doesn't happen.
Get informed on the pet you want and present it to your dad. If he says no though, respect his wishes and wait until you have your own house and get your own pets.
Good Luck.

It might be something you won't be able to do, but here goes. Do you have a friend that has a hamster? If so see if you can "borrow" their hamster for a day. You might decide you don't want one after that. If the friend can visit you for a day, tell them to bring their hamster that way you will have "help" taking care of it for the day. Of course you can probably buy one at the pet store, along with all the supplies (DON'T buy the elaborate cage at first) and then if your dad doesn't like it you can "give" it to a friend. OR take it back to the pet store, you probably won't get a refund but you will have tried. And then YOU might find out you don't really like a hamster either.

Just to let you know, the initial stert up for the first month having a hamster is $60-$100, depending on the cage you get and breed/color of hamster. You will need a cage, wheel (recommend silent wheel), water bottle, food, food bowl, treats, litter (only Aspen, Critter Care (Wal Mart) or Care Fresh (pet stores)), toys, money for vet bills if ever sick, and lots or attention. After the first month you can expect to spend about $25-$30 for food, treats and litter. That's if your dad ever were to agree, but other then proving yourself as a responsible person, ask him to just go to the pet store and show him one that you like (don't ever try to make him pet one if he doesn't like them-big mistake to do that) and give him puppy dog eyes (works fairly good for girls) with an added please. My daughter talked me into a snake and I was never one to like them. Now I hold the snake around my neck. How good are your grades, maybe your dad would be willing to make you a deal, like if you get all A's on your next report card, he can agree to you getting a hamster, but the catch is you will need to keep the grades up there or he can find the hamster another home type deal. If my oldest daughter made me a deal like that, I'd gone for it since she is usually getting D's & E's. I did threaten to sell her snake if she didn't improve all her grades by at least one letter grade this school year, well she got 3 A's and one B last time.

Above all you need to show your dad you can be trusted with a hamsters care and needs. This means listening, doing chores, not breaking curfew, getting good grades in school, etc.

i was going through the same exact things, i swear-check my questions and you'll see i asked liek the same thing.

Anyway. My parents are COMPLETE animal haters. This is how i have persuaded both my mom and dad into getting me a hamster:

1.download a program called keynote or powerpoint. (they are slide show things)

2. make a slideshow with different slides. i had ones liek this: why i should get a hamster, how do i take care of them, etc.

3. Set up two chairs (one for each parent) in front of the computer. Add a footrest if you want. Put a small table between the chairs. Put fresh fruit and a beverages out in wine glasses.

4. Put classical music on in the background.

5. **make sure the room is clean, or else they will be distracted.

6. get your parents lead them into the room, sit them down pour them a drink.

7. CLOSE THE DOOR. lol

8. give the presentation.

9. if you can have yor mom call a friend who has a hamster's mom.

10. keep persuading them with research for a few more days and they will finially say yes!

I am getting mine next saturday because i am going to arizona for february break.

i reallyyy hope this helps, and you get what you want.

get dressed up in that ugly sweater your mom loves but you hate.

Keep asking him! My mum hates all rodents however I convinced her to get me a rat by repetitively asking her! I left notes around the house, pictures and she let me. I would recommend you get a rat though, they are MUCH more sociable and playful. Boy rats love to cuddle where as girls rats are very active and will play most of the time.

you need to tell your dad that a hamster is one of the most easiest animals to take care of, it lives in a cage, it doesn't smell, it eats very little, no vet bill(almost all the time) the coast to keep him well fed, and clean isn't that much, he won't have to worry about taking care of it if your gone for 3 days, and he is small and wouldn't even notice him in the house(keep him in your room) tell your dad its a good starter pet.

hahaha i had the same problem years ago, i just bought him myself and he didn't go in my room very often so i took a long time for him to find out, that said...we was pretty mad when he found out. i would suggest that you tell him the you will be solely responsable for this pet, financially and otherwise, tell him it will be a good lesson in responsability

screw hamsters they bite and are stupid.
if you want to impress him buy a rat. they're really intelligent and you can teach them tricks.
they rarely bite and are far more interactive than a hampster.
