My teacher gave us all a seed, that we have to plant over spiring break. He will not tell us what the plant is, and the person that comes back with the biggest plant gets the best grade, smallest gets worst, and so forth. Any tips? would honey help? sugar? idk, just tell me what to do

First Plant it in some Mricalgrow planting Soil. Then also
give it some either Mricalgrow or Oscote Slow Time Release Fertilizer also. Then get a cheap water stick for checking to
make sure you do not over water the soil. Then also put it in area where it gets filtered Sun lite. The best Filtered lite means enough lite that you can read a newspaper or magazine with. That you do not need to turn on any other light.
If you do not have this then get a Grow lite or make one.
They are not that hard to fix-up a simple one. However if you live in area where the Sun is out at least Minium of 5 hours a,day helps best. If you need to make that other one yourself
the way my old O.H. Teacher showed us was.
1) Take a small Desk Lamp with a goose neck put a shade around it and show it toward your seed or growing area to help get plant growing quick. The Light Bulb should not really be more then 25-Watt- Todays time I also suggest a Frosted Bulb though. This is last resort if you do not get good Sun Light only. Natural real Sun lite is always the best though.
Good luck With your Project.

As a general rule: plant the seed 4 times the thickness, in other words, if the seed is 1/4 inch THICK, plant it 1 inch deep. {see, math does come in handy! lol}

Plant it flat unless the teacher told you to plant it on end {I only know one seed that needs to be planted on end}. Now, water the seed, you can set the pot in a saucer of water or use a squirt bottle, If you just pour water from a cup it might dislodge the seed or move the dirt so the seed ends up deeper than you want. {and might not sprout}

If it is a seed that gets planted very deeply then it doesn't need light to sprout; seeds like tomatoes, peppers, and any other tiny or very flat seed usually needs light to sprout.

If your parents have a heating pad ask if you can use it, after the pot is completely drained of extra water then put in a plastic bag, like a veggie bag from grocery store and close the top partially, and place on the heating mat on LOW.

Check daily to see if the seed has come thru the top of the soil, when it has, remove from the bag and the heating mat.

The plant will need a lot of LIGHT or it will get "leggy" and fall over. Use chamomile tea {plain} to water the plant & don't get too wet; chamomile will help prevent a disease called damping off that kills seedlings.

If you live in an area with lots of sunlight put it in a window. If you don't have the sunlight then maybe you can get a growbulb, available at stores like Target & Walmart and you just put that lightbulb in a regular lamp & keep it on the plant for at least 6 hours a day. {check to make sure it doesn't burn the leaves, if it does move the plant further from the light}

If you notice that the roots are growing out of the bottom of the pot then it is time to transplant to a larger pot. When transplanting, be careful to not hold it by the stem, a leaf will grow back if ripped off but the stem won't!

If the plant starts to turn yellow then use this mix: 3/4 of a teaspoon of epsom salts to 1 quart of warm water, plants will absort this thru leaves, stem & roots.

The student that GERMINATES the seed most rapidly will win!!!! Work on Germinating it fast.

Soak it in water that is warm as possible in a jar placed on a food warmer tray and put a thermometer into the water and get it to about 80 degrees F. No more. Soak it for at least 2 days. Carefully adjusting the heat knob.

The plant it in a STERILE MEDIUM you buy at the garden center that is enriched with STARTER FERTILIZER. Then put it back onto that food warmer tray and set it carefully to run about 80 degrees F. Keep it on this bottom heat while you add light..

As soon as the seed sprouts, add a Natural Daylight light about one foot above it. I would use about 60 Watts in an enclosed down light. Keep it on that Bottom heat and you will have the highest, healthiest and best plant around.

I grow a lot of specialty plants from seeds and this is how it is done professionaly

Interesting and rewarding project.

OK, in moist soil place the seed an inch or so under the soil, add miracle grow and water. Then return with a decent plant.

You can buy a cheap plant light at home depot for under $15. After your seed sprouts, keep the light on 24x7 (but don't burn it) and feed it plant food high in nitrogen.
