First, let me qualify my comments: I work at a small public affairs firm and have handled all of our phone/data purchasing and planning for 8 years. I have worked with Verizon Wireless, Cingular-AT&T, and T-Mobile over that span, and have dealt extensively with customer support, sales, service and product offerings from all three.
1.) I highly recommend Verizon Wireless. We have a business account with about 14 devices among 9 users. Not large by any means, but enough to have a good feel for the company. I've had bad in-store experiences, but I've never had a disappointment calling Verizon Wireless for sales or support. After other experiences, they are a rarity in the wireless telecom industry.
2.) AT&T, formerly Cingular Wireless, formerly AT&T Wireless, should be avoided at all costs. I've worked with them extensively as well prior to switching most of our accounts over to Verizon. We were never able to get all of our accounts onto one bill, and sales and support would always say one thing on one call and something else on the next call - infuriating! Also, expect 4-6 transfers per call, with frequent disconnections. And any of the "direct" toll free numbers that they give you to help you out are worthless - they all go to the same place. Worst of all, when AT&T first sold to Cingular, they kept selling us old equipment that was not compatible with the more advanced Cingular network. In effect they cost us thousands of dollars. Now that Cingular is going back to AT&T, I'd expect the same.
Also - I had a personal account with Cingular/AT&T that I cancelled 18 months ago, and they still haven't credited/sent me a check for a $150 overpayment (they told me 30-60 days), and are now insisting that I *send them* a bank statement as verification!! This operation is horrible, and the only contacts of use are the Better Business Bureau and your state Attorney General and Public Utilities Commission.
3.) A bit off topic, but I use T-Mobile personally, and while local service is fine in certain areas they tend to make coverage claims that are not true. In fact, during a 3-month stint at work, my coworkers and boss ended up out in the field with BlackBerry devices that had NO coverage in supposed T-Mobile coverage areas. Total sham. If you don't travel, and T-Mobile is known to work well in your area, and you can get a good deal, maybe give them a try. But for anything of substance, steer clear.
4.) Also, I highly reccomend that you avoid store purchases unless you know a competent individual with whom you can always deal with. Otherwise, you'll end up with a mixed bag of sales people, some who know what they're doing, some who don't, some who care, some who are just there to cash a check. If you buy over the phone, you can always return merchandise with the least amount of hassle, and you're assured the best customer service a provider has to offer... but that's not always a good thing as evidenced by AT&T/Cingular.
5.) One thing I will say to AT&T/Cingular's credit is that they do nail down the best technology 3-6 months before the competition. But by all means this is no reason to buy. All providers compete, and you will always be able to find a decent plan and device - so the main issue is service, service, service.
That's all I've got - I hope this is of some help. I've had some very involved experiences, to say the least, and I hope they can benefit someone else.

If you look at the commericals, which advertise the fewest drop calls you have got to go with Cingular. The thing is AT&T was bought out by Cingular, and AT&T had already been around for years so they have the most towers, which means they provide the best signal. When At&T combined with cingular their signal only got stronger. I live in Denver, CO and I use to have Verizon and we have "Dead-Spots) out here still that when driving through the area you call is dropped, or you are picked up by another service carrier (for instance: Cingular) and Verizon will then charge you a hell of a fee for "Roaming" when it is their own inefficiency that does not allow them to provide a signal for their clientel.
Make the right choice and go with cingular... another added advantage is Cingular is a GSM service provider meaning they have sim cards, which can be taken from your phone (should it become damaged) and placed into another Cingular, or unlocked phone and used. This helps me all the time as I am known for busting phones, and so instead of having to purchase another phone from the phone comp. because they have to sync it with your phone number just buy another one on ebay, and trade the cards out. I buy blackberry all the time on ebay for like 50.00 and just trade out sim cards. You would have to purchase insurance through Verizon, pay on it monthly without ever using it, and the one time you do decide to use it you will have to pay them 50.00 dollars anyways. I don't think Verizon ever switched over to Sim cards. I believe they are still using digital signals.

verizon to me is not good, they give good reception, but the customer service is low in quality, i had the razor phone, it was crappy, they wouldnt replaced it, i had to deal with it for over 6 months, until i have to fight to get the motorolaa q at a discount rate, then there plans are ridiclous, they are to high and expensive, if u want a better buy, Sprint, or cingular will be the best buy

We have had Verizon for years - when this contract is up, I am going to switch to Cingular. We cannot use our cell phones from our home with Verizon - Someone from Verizon told me that no cell phone provider can guarantee reception in any building - that's crap. We live in city limits.

I have had Verizon for about 5 years and have never had any problems. I couldn't compare it to Cingulair because we don't get it here, but Verizon is good!

it all depends on your location i have had both ,..cingular has worked better for me .ask if they still have a 15 day trial period then judge for your self.
