"Snot" or mucus, is a clear secretion of the respiratory tract and nasal passages. It's purpose is to keep your nose and lungs from drying out in addition to trapping bacteria and dust, preventing it from entering your lungs.
As the body reacts to a virus or infection in the body, it thickens with either
Yellow mucus = Caused by yellow colored Staphylococcus aureus bacteria
or
Green mucus = Caused by yellow colored Staphylococcus aureus bacteria + blue colored Pseudomonas pyocyanea bacteria.
