You want an intel core 2 duo processor or amd turion 64
an 80gb hard drive at least
DVD-RW/CD-RW
1gb RAM
15" screen
Windows Vista Home (pref. Premium)
These are the most important things. I will suggest HP's DV6000 series laptops. (you can find them in most electronics stores the model number begins with DV6***) And they are very good and within your price limit. Bonus** some of them come with a built-in webcam.

Toshiba's are great and Hp are getting pretty good now because they have Turion Processors and are pretty cheap, those should really help you through college. And are very portable and light weight, may very. if you go around above 900+ then you have a media laptop good use for editing stuff and shouldnt be slow at all

I like the one over there on my coffee table. It's a Gateway and I got it at Best Buy for $1700. It runs XP Pro and has Pentium 3 something but my PC will kick it's *ss.

I have recently bought an HP laptop. Great speed, great memory, great look and online, real time chat with HP help personnel.
My advice, shop around. The Pcs these days are pretty similar in offerings and speed. Decide what you want (software, connections, size, etc) and shop around.
