I'm trying to update my ASUS P4P800 Deluxe motherboard BIOS (As I have hang ups while installing XP SP2). I installed win XP SP1 and downloaded latest asus update utility, it gave me a choice to update bios from internet, I took it. Now for half an hour Asus update utility is not responding, I clearly hear that it is doing something in my PC box (strange sound a bit different from hard disk). Basically, I don't know if it is normal, how long should I wait or just kill the process. What happens to my BIOS?

Thanks for any help, Martynas

Actually, I solved the problem by explicitly updating required *.rom file and utility could flash it. This BIOS update was necessary, because without it XP SP2 install simply caused system not to boot any more. Now it works fine! Thanks for the help anyhow!

The BIOS was not updated properly. I seriously doubt you can update your BIOS properly via internet unless your machine is a server class, and bootable via NIC. Don't know ASUS personally, but try resetting your BIOS by taking the battery off your mother board for a mintue and put it back on (the battery often looks like a large watch battery). If this does not work, try flashing your BIOS via a flppy disk (made with the program from the website of course).

If that does not work either, you are in big trouble. You have to try to locate your CMOS chip and see if you can reset it. Depends on the mother board, the design varies from board to board. It's best you contact customer support of your PC maker before you make it worse. Good luck.

Removing the battery will only reset the BIOS settings It actually resets the CMOS (i.e. any settings you have changed in the BIOS, and the system date and so on) this may help but if you have screwed your BIOS then removing the battery isn't going to help.

I've never experienced an online flash updater for a BIOS before but it sounds like a bad idea. As a decent rule of thumb if it aint broke, don't fix it. Especially where the BIOS is concerned as repairing it later can be a pain. Most (if not all) BIOS chips are flashed when manufactured and updates are normally infrequent and make very few (minor) changes.

Most motherboard manufacturers websites offer BIOS updates as a downloadable standalone .exe. If you really feel the need to update your BIOS then it is always better to update your BIOS this way.
