People who say they are the same, they do not have a clue about processors. Yes, both brands do the same function, but the question is "which one is better?"
With every generation of processors, the winner changes. Last generation, it was AMD because they could produce the same speed for a cheaper price. This generation, Intel wins by producing the fastest dual processor and beat AMD to the 65nm technology and quad processor.
When you are looking at prices, AMD has always been cheaper. The problem with AMD is that they are still at 90nm technology, which means high wattage consumption. High wattage means more power consumption and hotter processor. AMD's CPU architecture is still inferior to Intel.
Intel still produces the best and fastest processor. They are a little more expensive than AMD, but are worth it. Their Core Duo 2 are excellent buys.
You can no longer at price, speed frequency or model number to determine which one is the best. You need to look at benchmarks and reviews. All tests say Intel is the best.
If you are building a budget system, then I guess you will need to stick to AMD.

Pros and Cons both ways. I use Only AMD. I build ( White Box ) computers, that is to say, they are not trade named like Dell, Sony or HP.

This is a chart to end the argument:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=430&model2=464&chart=170
In games as the charts PROVE not much difference, in applications, the Intel core2 cpu is faster. For gaming, it will be the video card that will be the most important.

And staying away from vista:

Just look up reviews, they will always help you out.
