I was working at a stable yesterday (centeral WI) and heard odd sounds coming from the back of the horse pasture. The sounded like "who-ooh" and baying hounds cut short. Every once and a while, there was a long high pitched howl thing. Closest thing I could think of is like a pack of dog's howling, but kind of messed up. I know that it was a group of birds on the ground, but not sure of the species (I was too far away to get a color description). It was in an open field where they keep buffalo next to a bunch of 2nd growth hardwoods. I know it wasn't a prairie chicken, but I can not think of what it could be...I know I don't have much info, but any ideas?

I forgot to mention. The calling was from 6am until about 7:3-8 am.
I know most of my birds, but I have never heard of a sound like this coming from one. Another possibility is an escaped exotic from the neighbor's wildgame farm.

Common ground nesting birds of the Midwest are bobwhite quail, pheasants, prairie chicken, grouse, wild turkey and woodcock. They don't nest until June. From what you are describing it is not one of those. Perhaps an exotic bird.

Rarliest ground-nesters I can think of would be killdeer. The "whoo-oh", though sounds more like mourning doves - they nest in trees, though.

Do you have an idea of approximate size?

Sounds like coyotes maybe?
