They're simply different formats.

In the good ole days they had - format and + format for the DVD and CDs. For example you might have bought a VCR player that would only play +DVDs only or only play -DVD only. The same thing for the CDs. Now they make VCR players and DVD drives that play either format. One is just as good as the other.

Now the R means it can read only. So you could record to a +/- R DVD only. Then with the RW DVD you can record and rerecord over it as need be.

The R means recordable and the RW means it can be erased & re-recorded or "re-writeable"
