Reading is a good bet as there's a mssive shopping centre there. For quirkier stuff try Bath or Oxford but maybe that is a bit far.
Karen Millen is a bit expensive perhaps but in the sales you might find something.
When I was younger I bought ball gowns from topshop (!), principles, TKMax, Karen Millen, and little shops. Also try Debenhams and charity shops.
Or go to your local big department store and book an appointment with a personal shopper. She'll spend a couple of hours finding clothes for you within your price range (so Debenhams is best as a bit cheaper than House of Fraser, Selfridges etc). You're under no obligation to buy, but they are often quite good and know the shop well so you sit with a cup of tea while they bring it to your extra large changing room. Be clear about the price limit. They're good at finding a combination of accessories and dresses, some from the cheaper ranges and some more expensive and putting them all together. Also try their ideas even if it's not normally what you would choose.

tk maxx its pretty cool in there you can get some really nice designer good quality stuff at minute prices, only the other day i got an Elle dressing gown for £10 and it was supposed to be £60. They have some really lovely dresses too, there was a lovely ankle length gold satin one with embroided detail around the top!! last time i was in. wish i had an excuse to buy one!!!
or theres always e-bay they have some fab sellers making dresses that look just like the ones the stars wear for the Oscars etc... and i think they do made to measure and again really reasonable prices!!!
that's a link to a lovely one on e-bay:

nicely you pick an outstanding opinion i think of its is unquestionably and previous finding gown yet i don't think of you will desire to placed on something reveling or too short to look wonderful a t a prom, if that comparable gown had no sleeves i'd like it, much greater useful if it became into strapless (would not recommend it must be with a super kind of cleavage) and the colour is wonderful too, especially the pink one
