WE have a cast iron skillett that has not been cured and somehow it rusted. There's a large spot in the bottom. I need to know how to get the rust out, if it's possible.

Hey, it's metal. Take some sandpaper and sand the rust out. I don't care what you start with, but end with a 200 grit or finer.

Then, immediately season the pan. Rub it down, inside AND out with lard, bacon grease, or vegetable oil. Place in your oven UPSIDE DOWN, and cook at 250 for at least an hour.

Never use detergent when washing. If you do, your remove the grease in the pores of the pan. If you do this, you have to reseason. Clean water only. If it is seasoned right, it is just like non stick cookware.

Dry, and wipe down with oil when you put it away.

Scrub the bottom of the skillet with a Brillo pad. The steel wool will remove the rust and then you can rinse it and season it properly. No harm/no foul.

with cast iron pans we have after cleaning them we dry them on the stove but, occasionally we have to re-season them so we get some canola oil an wipe the pan with it really good and you should be good to go. with a new one pour some in the pan up the side and bake it in the oven for about 1/2 hour to 45min. then all you have to do is clean dry to on the stove not totally and every now and then wipe it down with canola oil. they last for ever.

I use extra heat i.e. a small propane torch will do....
After heating the blemished area{you'll see a reddish glow}
allow it to cool off...Rusty area may then be wire -brushed out!!

Use an abrasive tool, like choreboy, etc. When you're done, put it on the stove and completely dry it over the heat.
