Climatology is one of the many specialized branches of geography. It has a spatial aspect to it (whereas meteorology doesn't). The famous geographer who set out the climate classification system: Koppen, created the classification we still use today..or slightly modified.

They are intricately and inexorably linked. Deserts are where they are because of high pressure systems and descending air keeps them dry. Tropical wet climates are where they are because rising air is continuously forming clouds. Monsoonal climates are where they are because of the location of large land masses.

Climatology is important to the culture of a place, affects what food items are available, clothing and housing styles. Geographers should have a good understanding of the climate of the world and its pattern of distribution.
