You'll know... it's a lot more than discharge. It can begin to trickle out, but then it mostly comes out in a big gush if you stand up. Once you are upright though for a good period of time, it comes out more like a really heavy period flow, so you'll have to wear a pad on the ride to the hospital. Mine broke when I was in bed- very light, but then I stood up to go to the bathroom and it went everywhere... I had to change clothes and take a shower. Then, I made sure to put on an overnight pad for the ride to the hospital and brought extras. Once it breaks, it just keeps leaking out until the baby's head is fully in the birth canal, in which case the head is blocking the fluid from coming out anymore. So, expect lots of changing pads until then at the hospital. Luckily, your amniotic fluid reproduces itself, so you don't have to worry about that. Hope this helps!

a big gush! I mean it can be different for everyone.
My own experience with my son...
I was in bed sleeping and I was having a dream that I was going pee on the toilet but to wake up realizing I wasn't in the bathroom! I got out of bed and crossed my legs and was waiting for the right moment to run to the washroom....I got only about 2 feet and the water gushed right out....It was clear, but it was also green....I had macohnem (the baby's bowel movement inside of me instead after birth..lucky me!!! lol)
I was 2 1/2 weeks early, I hadn't dropped yet but he was in position and 17 hours later he was born (12:52am)...mind you the doctors were slowly bringing on my labour so I really didn't start feeling the labour pains until 10:30 pm and my water broke at 7:55 am

I thought I had to pee alot... It was clear thick fluid. No gush or anything. It did that for 3-4 hours. Then I went to the hospital and was in labor all night but not bad till the next morning and they broke my water again. I had my baby with in 1 hour of that.

i heard it feels more like a big gush... but i think it can also drip too... im pretty sure you would know the difference in a discharge or your water breaking, if youre concerned call your doctor they can use these strips that are like pieces of paper which change colors if any amniotic fluid is detected to tell if your water broke or not.

It's been a long nine months and you're anxiously awaiting the big moment. How will you know when you're finally in labor? According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the following symptoms indicate the onset of labor:
1. Bloody show: You notice a pink stain on your underwear or toilet tissue. This indicates that you lost the mucus plug.
2. Rupture of membranes: You feel fluid gush or trickle from your vagina indicating that the bag of waters containing your baby has ruptured.
3. Regular contractions that intensify: You feel contractions that are frequent and increasingly painful. They don't go away but instead intensify with physical activity.
4. Pain in lower back: You feel a regular and intense pain in your lower back that radiates to your lower abdomen and sometimes even to your legs.
5. Cramps that feel like intestinal upset: You feel cramping that seems like the onset of diarrhea, and you may actually experience diarrhea.
If you're not sure you're in labor, call your doctor and discuss your symptoms. If you feel that you're definitely in labor, call your doctor and ask her for instructions or to meet you at the hospital.
Important note: Don't insert tampons, take a tub bath, or have intercourse after the rupture of membranes. If the fluid from the rupture is tinted green, brown, or gold, contact your doctor immediately. This is a possible sign of fetal distress.
Now the moment you've been waiting for all these months is imminent. Get ready to experience the most life-altering event you could ever imagine, and have faith in your body's ability to deliver its most precious cargo.

you will feel like you have peed yourself. It can be a trickle, but it can be a gush.
With both my children the doctors had to break my water so I had big gushes.
But you must first lose your mucus plug, the baby has to drop...there are signs before this that are subtle but you notice them if you pay attention for them.

Water breaking doesn't feel like anything, one minute you are dry and the next you are soaked. At first you may think you are peeing on your self because it is warm, but if you look it is clear and it doesn't stop like peeing does. Congrats and good luck!!
