First... why do people always ask this? Knowing the difference won't help you in any real way in the real world.

Second... Alligators are only found in two places in the world- America and China. In every other part of the world they are either crocodiles, caimans (South American gator-like crocs), or gharials (the long, skinny snout crocs).

So... if you are in the US or China and see two crocs side by side, the one with the rounded snout is the gator.

Don't worry about the teeth- if you are that close, you are too late. Color only helps if the croc is clean- otherwise you are seeing the color of the mud.

23 species of crocodile worldwide (including caimans and gavials) (yes, correct spelling counts, people), two species of alligator, as madkins said, american and chinese. The american alligator ranges north into the Carolinas, south to Florida, and west into eastern Texas, they do NOT occur in central or south america or anywhere else in the world naturally. Florida is the only place in the world with both alligators and crocodiles.

Again, agreeing with Madkins, why does this question get asked ALL THE DANG TIME?! Why can't people just read the answers to the same question someone else asked?

Oh, I know, it's because they do it to drive me nuts because I can't resist going into more detail than anyone else. ;)

Again, starting from the nose, folks, join in if you know it.....

Alligators have two nasal discs, one nostril per disc, crocodiles have both nostrils on the one smaller nasal disc.

Alligators have a bit of an overbite, they DO have visible teeth with their mouth closed, but most of them are upper teeth, crocodiles have more teeth showing with a closed mouth, most noticable being the fourth tooth on the lower jaw, in some species, this tooth will stick up above the upper jaw. Also, alligators have conical post-like teeth, crocodiles have more dagger-shaped teeth.

I hope you never have to tell the difference by the inside of their mouths, but alligators have almost an almond coloration to the inside of their mouths, crocodiles have orangish coloration in their mouths.

Crocodiles have flatter heads than alligators.

Alligators have golden eyes, crocs have green eyes.

Alligators range from charcoal grey to black, typically with lighter (yellowish to whitish) colored banding. (I've seen alligators with mostly yellows, they're all individuals, some are all black..... but typically grey to black).
Crocodiles range from olive drab to golden khaki.

The scutes or osteoderms or 'bumps' on an alligator's back are in straight rows and do not occur into the side or belly skin. Crocs have more randomly patterened scutes, in some species these osteoderms can even occur in the belly skin. (the reasoning for more leather items being made from alligators than crocs, no bones in the skin means no self-destruction of the leather over time, it's called a 'classic skin' in the business.)

Crocs have more webbing on their back feet.

Comparing the scutes on alligator and crocodile tails is like comparing a '55 chevy to a '57 chevy.... crocs have much more pronounced 'fins' than gators.

Do I need to go into scale counts and stuff too? Or is that enough?

One easy thing to look for. Teeth. If you see teeth when the mouth is closed, it's a croc.
