Try some Robin Cook... Some of his books are almost like chick flicks with more action... I like them. It's fiction, but not sci-fi exactly (his books involve medical stuff so I guess TECHNICALLY it could be science, but not like UFO's and aliens and stuff... except Contagion so don't read that one...)

Go Ask Alice by anonymous was pretty interesting. I've never read Gossip Girl, so I'm just going to throw out some teen lit on "real life" and all that stuff. Saint Iggy, Fat Kid rules the World and Playing in Traffic are all kind of sad, or empowering, however you want to look at it. I hear a lot of teens like Speak and those Dave Peltzer books, A Child Called "It" and whatnot...but again, I've never really gone in for those kinds of books. The only gossiping teenager girly girl books I can think of involve vampires, the devil, and ghosts right now, so sorry.

You did not say anything about animal subjects, pro or con. I really loved reading animal books, mostly about horses. My favorite author was Walter Farley. He wrote a series about The Black Stallion and a series on The Island Stallion. I read them all. Old Yeller is a book about a dog. The Long Journey is a book about two dogs and a cat that traveled across the country together. I don't know if these would be up your alley or not. But I loved these types of books.

I believe the term is "mythological creatures," and it's actually spelled "harry potter" and "gossip girl."

Here's a list for you:
Brave New World by Alduous Huxley
The Catcher in the Rye by JD Sallinger
1984 by George Orwell
Animal Farm, also by George Orwell
Dictionary by Webster
MLA Handbook, Grammar section.

You know what? Just stick with a nice magazine, or a book with lots of pictures.

You will love the book "I am Charlotte Simmons" by Tom Wolfe. I read it a couple of years ago and then gave it to my teenaged-daughter to read. We both loved reading it. Definitely not sci-fi. Charlotte is going to college her freshman year, and has many experiences there. She grows up on many different levels. She is a smart girl to begin with, just naive. She is not a gossip girl, but there are plenty of those in the book to keep your interest.

hmm... well, I've never read any type of gossip girl books or other similar genres so i can't help ya there. I'm a huge historical fiction fan, so that doesn't help ya either.

i would recommend maybe some of the older classics that have a romantic spin, such as Louisa May Alcott (she wrote more than just little women) or Jane Austen... maybe Anne Rice if you like Gothic stuff, and Joan Lowery Nixon if you want to check out murder mysteries. best of luck!

"Marley & Me" I read that when it was recommended to me, I didn't think I would like it but I ended up loving it and it has became my favorite book! I don't like sci-fi stuff either so you will probably love it also!
