Why do confident people get complained about/talked about.

Because people who are less confident find it easier to put down the confident folks than to look in the mirror and take steps to improve their own attributes.

Politics, politics, politics.

My guess would be that confident people threaten others so the "others", in pursuing their own interests/promotions/raises conspire to knock him/her down a peg. Thus they now look better.

As you are prolly finding out, its dog eat dog...especially in middle management.
