I am looking to open a salon/spa. I have my cosmetology license from a world renowned academy of cosmetology; and I am also looking into getting my Massage practitioners license, so that I can offer many different services. I would offer : Massages, Aromatherapy, Facials, Manicures, Pedicures, Waxing, Haircuts/Styles/Perms/Highligh... ext.. all in one place, all done by me. It would be very private as I would not accept walk in clients, and would only have one client in the spa at a time because I know some people are not comfortable with spa settings, especially when they are busy! So... would you like a setting like that? Why or why not? Would you pay extra for more personal attention and a cosmetologist with a higher level of training? why or why not? What kind of services do you receive on a monthly/yearly basis and would you go more often if you had a good relationship and trust with your cosmetologist? Thank you!

Pat C: Yes, I am licensed, and insurance is something that is easily attainable in this business, as we are insured from the day we recieve our license. Insurance is actually quite affordable. It would be profitable as I would have no staff to pay, unless I brought someone in for specialties (such as if someone wanted artificial nails, something cosmetoligists are not trained to do) and my rent would be free in exchange for services. (my family is full of real estate investors.) I can make over $60 an hour. How is that not profitable?
Secondly, I am not looking for business advice, It was a simple *would you use this or not?*. The end.

I think it's a good idea. It's true there are some people who are uncomfortable in a spa setting. But can't you just have private rooms or areas set up to be able to have more than one client at a time? It just seems like that would decrease your profits if you did it that way. Especially with the hair & manicure part. I think if you hired a couple more cosmetologists just for that end of things and then told people about your other spa services and how you plan to do it (1 person at a time, privately), that might work out better. Then again, that's just my opinion. I hope it all works out for you though!!!!

If you are planning to do all you mentioned, all by yourself, it seems like it would be an all day procedure. Just kidding. Do you have the proper licenses, equipment and insurance, just to bring up a few questions? I personally don't see how you could PROFITABLY run this sort of business, by yourself. The insurance would probably be enough to prevent you from doing this.
