I have an 84 Suburban with a 6.2 Diesel engine, I just put a new starter on and it keeps breaking bolts and grinding the flywheel, had to replace flywheel once. Still cant get it to work right for more than a day or so before it break another bolt or just starts to grind. Please, if you have any ideas let me know.

I have checked around, every mechanic I have spoken too says the starter doesnt need shimed. Its an ACDelco Gear Reduction Starter.

I disagree with the answes listed, I'm not saying they dont know what they are talking about, I had a similar problem, let me explain if I may.

The starter is the right one, if its the ACDelco Gear reduction start like you say, you have the right one. The problem likely lies with the shops neglegance. When you buy the ACDelco gear reduction starter for that engine, you usually need to get a new bolt. That starter has 2 mounting bolts, the 1 that sets closer to the engine is probably just a "wee" bit too long. This was probably overlooked by the shop as they would have tightened it down as much at they could, then looked and seen it looked like it was ok, but they probably didnt try to shake the starter up and down to see if it was tight. That bolt will bottom out just a pinch before it tightens against the starter. Please, check this, and bear in mind with as much as that starter has been kicking around, you may need to use heliCoils on those holes in the block, they may be striped out now.

You probably need to shim it. Go to any Napa Auto Parts store and ask for starter shims. It may be engaging too far and the starter torques itself and breaks the bolts, or doesn't disengage all the way and eats up the flywheel teeth.

Are you sure you have an 84. An 85 starter looks similar to yours but it is a differen part number. Maybe you have an 85 instead..
