Range is dictated by your genetic makeup and sex. You can reach the potential of your range but there is a limit. Knowing that limit is important. If you stay in your range (all good singers do) you'll do ok. Singing is about touching people with your voice not about how high you can sing.
Learn as much as you can about the voice and how it works...and how to take care of it. Warm ups and Warm downs are very important.
ALL the stars take vocal lessons at some point.. ALL of them.. The good ones anyway. But you can learn a lot on your own first.
There are plenty of books, dvd's etc. that can help. I used the Rock and Roll singer's survival guide myself and it worked wonders.
The best out there is Mark Baxter. He has an FAQ page and his own site. URL's below. On his site you will also find Free Singing Lessons. Once you start reading you will realize that he knows what he's talking about...
Hope these helps

You should not stretch your voice past its natural range. For example, if you're an alto - RELISH THAT! Don't try to become a soprano. Much of Jazz music was based on the lower range of voices. And Jazz music is really, really hot...and cool. :)
But if you want to extend your range, work at your voice very slowly. If you can't afford to learn some vocal exercises based on music theory, then something I used to do was throw on some rock music (probably "classic" to you) and practice singing the guitar solos....Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, etc.
You also want the back of your tongue to lay flat so it opens up your windpipe and creates access to the palatte on the roof of your mouth, and NEVER sing from your chest - always the diaphragm, that's where the support comes from.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Do not do anything that hurts. Once you damage a voice, that's it. Finito. It rarely ever goes back to the way it used to be.

To sing high notes there is a way of hittin them but you can't learn how to sing high notes. You first would have to learn to find the breath support to reach the high notes. You need to learn how to sing in your falsetto because the falsetto is the transfer into high notes. Try some exercises that have big jumps from a low note to a high note. Make sure to breathe from the bottom of your stomach to your ribs. In a short period of time, your high note range wil expand.

try when you hit the top of your range (the highest note you can sing) and try singing through your nose instead of your throat (say the letter E through your nose- thats were the note and the air should be) or open your mouth- it should feel like you are yawning and breathe into your diaphram. your belly and chest, should expand. but yes your range is limited to some degree. also, you can find vocal exercises online.

Every person has their own voice range. If you can't sing high notes, then you just can't. There isn't much you can do to force it. You have a lower range.

sometimes a kick in the nuts has amazing results. If you are female then I really don't know... Sorry Laurie O but that was one crack that I really could not ignore. Good luck with the singing anyway.

My voice instructor used to inform me that I had 2 distinct making a music voices -- higher and decrease sign in. human beings attempt to sing extreme notes of their decrease sign in, it truly is many times the region. once you attain the optimal note you could on your decrease sign in, change as a lot as your higher sign in. you'd be able to sense once you do. i wish this helped somewhat...i'm no longer precisely positive a thanks to describe with out preparation you.
